Murals are becoming increasingly popular in Australia, throughout both cities and outback country towns. Public outdoor artworks on water towers and silos adorn country roads, as well as street art on building walls in towns and cities, providing enjoyment for locals and tourists alike. Travelling to the country towns to enjoy the murals provides a much needed boost to the local economy. It is definitely something you should consider adding to your next travel plan when in Australia.
Silo Art in Wilton
- Structure: Treatment Plant Water Tanks
- Where: On the eastern side of the Hume Highway just before the Picton Road exit as you head south
- Best time to photograph: In the afternoon as the sun shines on the artwork
- Painted by: Local mural artist Joe Quilter in partnership with another artist know as Snarl
Ok, so these murals are technically painted on water tanks, not silos, but they are included in what is known as the “Silo Art Trail” locations. So we won’t split hairs about it.
The artists spruced up the tanks with their colourful artwork depicting scenes from the Wollondilly Shire in NSW. There are three separate scenes that together form a larger piece of art.
Silo Art Details
The tank on the left shows a local farmer dealing with the harsh Australian climate.
The middle tank features a lyrebird, which was symbolic to the local indigenous people of the area.
The tank on the right portrays a wedge-tailed eagle and a Waratah – the NSW floral emblem.
The silo art in Wilton was commissioned to give the tanks a makeover, much to the enjoyment of local commuters travelling on the freeway.
There are many painted silos and water tanks around Australia, and it is a big country. Here is a helpful website that provides an interactive map of many of the artworks. Australian Silo Art Trail.
As I see more of them in my travels, I will be sure to update the list on my Murals & Street Art page on the blog as well. Where will you stay when you come to NSW to see the Silo Art Trail?
