Getting from Brisbane Airport to the city is easy on the Brisbane AirTrain! Both the domestic and international terminals have their own stop on the AirTrain line. The journey takes about 20 minutes from the domestic terminal into the city centre. The train also continues on to the Gold Coast.

I have come to realise that I have always taken travelling for granted. For as long as I can remember, looking forward to the next holiday has been a way of life. Planning it, anticipating it, and then finally getting to go there. It took a global pandemic in 2020 to show me just how much freedom I have always had. Since I was a child, I have been eerily fascinated by the tragic story of ancient Pompeii. A thriving city built in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius until A.D79, when it was suddenly destroyed as the volcano erupted violently. In 1748 a group of explorers re-discovered the remains of the city, and its people. I had seen images of the plaster casts that were taken of the people and animals caught in the last moments of their lives, which brought their story to life in such a vivid way. For as long as I can remember I had wanted to travel to Italy and see the ruined city that was frozen in time by the ominous Mt Vesuvius.

A visit to the Whakarewarewa Living Maori Village Rotorua is a unique experience, combining a glimpse into Māori culture and their history of everyday life in a geothermal area. Boiling mud, simmering pools of teal blue water, coloured lakes and explosive geysers form the landscape in and around the village, where people have been living for hundreds of years.

Take a short 8-minute drive into the Whakarewarewa Redwoods Forest, and experience a walk through hundred-year-old trees. The Redwoods Treewalk in Rotorua takes about 40 minutes to complete although everyone is welcome to take the walk at their own pace. You walk through the tranquil forest across swinging wooden bridges suspended between platforms that hang around the tree trunks. The attraction is open for both day and night walks, and can even be done in wet weather.

I have stayed at the Meriton Suites Mascot Central a few times now. The rooms provide a relaxed home away from home feeling, sleep two people and are in a very convenient location. Situated less than five minutes’ walk to Mascot station, it is an easy trip by train to both the airports and the city from there.

One of the best things about travelling to different countries is that you get to see what things are like in other parts of the world. As you travel to new places, you will usually find something that is done differently there, compared to the way it is done in your home town. I’m always on the lookout for these differences and enjoy them when I find them. It’s kind of like a cultural treasure hunt. Murals are becoming increasingly popular in Australia, throughout both cities and outback country towns. Public outdoor artworks on water towers and silos adorn country roads, as well as street art on building walls in towns and cities, providing enjoyment for locals and tourists alike. Travelling to the country towns to enjoy the murals provides a much needed boost to the local economy. It is definitely something you should consider adding to your next travel plan when in Australia.

Each year the Southern Highlands Food and Wine Festival is held around the first weekend in October for the long weekend. This also conveniently coincides with the annual Tulip Time Festival that is held in Corbett Gardens in Bowral. The festival has been increasing in size and popularity over the years and is now held on Bowral’s historic Bradman Oval.
