Back up your Travel Photos

I have come to realise that I have always taken travelling for granted.  For as long as I can remember, looking forward to the next holiday has been a way of life.  Planning it, anticipating it, and then finally getting to go there.  It took a global pandemic in 2020 to show me just how much freedom I have always had.  This year, more than ever before, it has become a priority for me to make sure my travel memories are protected.  This leads me to encourage you all to back up your travel photos.

Enjoying Memories

I am sure many of us who enjoy travelling have been missing the ability to get out and see something new.   In times of isolation, and COVID-19 lockdowns, we can turn to our travel photos to reminisce about previous travel experiences.  Sharing stories and memories with family and friends helps us to re-live the experiences we enjoyed.

When I was young, we had a thing called family “slide night”.  (So yes, before digital photos were around!)  My parents would set up the slide projector and we would click through hours of photos of our travels.  As the images flashed up on the screen, they would tell me the stories again, that came with the photo.

Tell me a story

One particular story that always makes me laugh was the time we were on a road trip in New Zealand. We had stopped to use the public toilet at a roadside rest stop in the middle of nowhere.  When we entered the building, a door was hanging precariously sideways from one hinge.  As I seven-year-old child, I immediately knew what had happened, and told my Mum:  “Look!  The Six-Million Dollar Man has been in here!”   ( In case a few of you have to google what that is,  a popular TV show at the time was the Six Million Dollar Man.  And Steve used to kick in a lot of doors on that show, apparently)

New Zealand must be pretty interesting if the Six Million Dollar Man went there…..

There are many amazing places to see in New Zealand. Here are just a few of the posts on my blog about beautiful New Zealand:

But I digress….

Back to the real world.

When I am not out travelling and taking photos, I am at home scrapbooking my photos.

It takes a lot of time to edit and curate photos into albums.  Add to that the need to back up your travel photos, and it becomes quite a time-consuming exercise.  One that is easy to put off to another day.

Before you know it, a year has passed and you haven’t taken any photo backups.  Over time, the technology changes, causing the backups you do have to become outdated. Then you will have to make updated backups.   An on-going process that can easily become a burden.  But if you lost those photos, it would be very disappointing!  Even heart-breaking.

I have found a perfect solution to these problems that I would like to share with you.  Permanent online cloud storage with a company called Forever.

What is Forever?

Forever offer guaranteed permanent storage for your photos and documents.

( I am a Forever Ambassador. If you click the link and buy Forever products, I will earn a commission at no additional expense to you. In fact, if you like the company and the products you can also become an Ambassador and do the same. )

Once you buy your storage at Forever, it is yours. You own it. No ongoing yearly payments – it is your own personal cloud storage. Guaranteed for your lifetime plus 100 years. That gives pretty good peace of mind.

Smartphone app

Forever have an app for your smartphone that allows you to easily back up your smartphone photos to your Forever storage account. One of my favourite features of the mobile phone app is that I have access to my ENTIRE online library of photos.  This allows me to simply scroll or search through my online library to quickly find an image and post to social media.  No more booting up a computer to access backup photos, they are now all at my fingertips.   All my photos, synced and in the same place. So easy!

File formats are kept up to date

Technology changes over time, and the way we store information changes also. Look at the changes that have occurred even in the last 50 years. We have moved from the use of film photography (and slide nights)  to digital photography (and sharing on social media).

From the introduction of personal computers using file storage floppy discs to CD’s to DVD’s and now just downloading or storing files using the internet. We have transitioned as a society, from people never having heard of a mobile phone, to everyone owning one – even primary school kids!

Another benefit of purchasing permanent storage with Forever is that not only can you back up your travel photos to your library, but they will also be continually updated to the latest file formats over time.  This means that the computers 20 years from now will still be able to read and access your files from formats that were uploaded today.

This is a great comfort to me, as I have personally spent a lot of money trying to update my photo formats. Knowing that paying my one-off fee to Forever for storage also includes keeping the file formats updated is an incredible bonus!

Storing and Sharing

In addition to securely storing all your memories, Forever also makes it simple to share those memories with whoever you choose!  Make as many albums as you like to organise and curate your photos. You can share your albums with family and friends, even if they don’t have a Forever account themselves, simply by sending them a link to your album.

  1. I think this is really important – especially after upgrading my iphone and now not being able to find photos and videos on there from a trip to France last year – they didn’t transfer from my old phone and if I had backed them up I would still have them

    1. Fabulous! I think it is awesome.
You can try the free 2GB account to see how you like the app and the features of the library. If you have any questions, I am happy to help.
Check out the link to the sample album I put in the article. 😁

  2. I will have to look into forever for my backups as well! My photos are split between 2 external HD – one that was formatted for Mac (from 2001 – 2015) and then the more recent ones on one formatted for Windows. So annoying that it has to be that way! Thanks for sharing about your experience with forever!

    1. Thanks for reading Lannie! As a Foerever Ambassador, I am happy to help you with any questions you have. 😁
