Street Art in Devonport NZ

Devonport New Zealand is a quaint little village to the North of Auckland.  A short 12-minute ferry trip from Auckland will bring you to the town.  A historic town with a dormant volcano, Victorian-era buildings and beautifully decorated beach style houses.  Street Art was really the last thing I was expecting to find on my visit to Devonport.  Yet, to my surprise, there were many pieces to be found on blank walls, and electricity junction boxes around the town.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you will know that I have a penchant for street art, with murals being my favourite type.  Many councils are now recognising the benefits of commissioning murals from artists to cover blank walls on their buildings.  From brightening the town for the residents, to advertising businesses, to promoting ideas and making statements, to providing an attraction for tourists to view; the creation of street art murals provides enrichment across the board.

I admire the artist’s ability to convey their ideas visually through the murals painted.  I would say that I am a creative person, myself.  I play the piano, I create scrapbook albums and cards by hand, and I like to write for this travel blog.  But I just cannot draw!  Don’t pick me as a Pictionary partner, because it’s not going to go well for you.  I wonder if that is why I am so interested by these street art murals that I find?  It’s absolutely something I could never do, and it seems so amazing to me every time I see these pieces.

Aren’t the Kiwis cute?

It’s not going to end well for the butterflys in Devonport NZ.

The turtle is definitely my favourite.

  1. I find it interesting that most of the pieces are from nature: flowers, trees and animals. Or perhaps you’re drawn to those things? 😉 I do like the turtle, but also the bird by Charlotte Hawley. Great finds!

    1. Thanks Lynn! It is interesting about the nature theme – I posted everything I found in the town. I’m glad you liked them.

  2. Thank you for sharing this. I’ve never noticed the street art in Devonport and plan to take my grandsons exploring next school holidays. We did a hunt for some in Papamoa earlier this year and found a few.
