Morrinsville is located in the Waikato region on New Zealand’s North Island, about half an hour’s drive out of Hamilton on the road to Te Aroha. It’s a pretty little town, with many places to grab a bite to eat in cafés, hotels and restaurants. There’s a nice bright playground for the kids in Thomas Park, a Rose Garden, a museum and several fuel stations and supermarkets. There’s also some quirky street art in Morrinsville!
Street Art in Morrinsville
Some towns have their street art painted on buildings….. In Morrinsville, you will find it painted on life size fibreglass cows standing around in the streets of the commercial part of town. The murals showcase the history and heritage of the town. Local businesses and families in the area sponsor individual cows.
If you’ve been reading my blog for long, you will know that my favourite type of street art is murals that brighten up the walls of city buildings. When I found out that there were painted cows standing around in Morrinsville, I just knew I wouldn’t be leaving New Zealand without driving out there to see them!
The cow street art project has successfully attracted visitors to the town since its inception in 2015. You can try and find the cows on your own, or join a walking tour.
Here is a link to the map of where the entire herd can be found. Can you find all 60 cows?
Seeing a herd of fibreglass cows painted with murals in the middle of a town is not something you’ll find everyday….. Unless you live in Morrinsville!
Morrinsville Mega Cow
Lastly, there is the Morrinsville Mega Cow, who was built to pay homage to the rich dairy culture in the Waikato region. ( In Australia, we’d just call it something ordinary like the ‘Big Cow’. But the Morrinsville Mega Cow sounds a bit more impressive. ) The larger-than-life bovine stands 6.5m tall and looks out over the main road into Morrinsville. “Mable”, as she has been christened, is one of the last to join the herd of around 60 cows now standing around in the streets of Morrinsville.
Let me know which cow is your favourite.

If you’re staying in Hamilton, I recommend the Central Stadium Apartments. Great location in the CBD and beautifully appointed.
Steam train is a possibility if you are in the area at the opportune time
I missed out on seeing the steam train this year that ran from Hamilton out to Morrinsville. That would have been a great day! I’ll have to keep my eye on this to see if I can make the journey next time I’m in New Zealand.
